Cleanings and Exams

Thorough exams and gentle hand cleaning, on a schedule built around your mouth.

A cleaning and exam is the appointment where problems can be found while they are still small and still easy to fix. At Soothing Dental in Plymouth, it means a detailed exam, x-rays taken in your own room, an oral cancer screening, and a cleaning where skillful hand scaling always takes place, rather than one rushed through with machines only.

Your first visit takes longer, and that is on purpose

New patients get extra time. That gives us room to gather a complete set of records, carry out a detailed new patient exam, and actually talk with you about what you want from your teeth. Most people have had the opposite experience somewhere else: in the chair, out the door, no real conversation. We would rather spend the time up front and get it right.

Hand scaling first, technology second

Every cleaning here involves expert hand scaling. It is slower than the alternative and it is far more thorough, because a hand instrument feels what a machine cannot. Where heavier buildup calls for it, we pair that with top-of-the-line ultrasonic cavitrons, and we have laser techniques available as well. The technology is there to support the hands, not replace them.

How often should you come in?

Six months is the familiar answer, but it is not the right answer for everyone. Some mouths stay healthy on a six month rhythm. Others hold much better at four months, or three, particularly where gum health needs closer watching. Dr. Alejandra deFuentes Cutter, D.D.S. builds a cleaning schedule around your mouth rather than a default, and she will explain plainly why she is suggesting it.

An oral cancer screening every single time

You do not have to ask for it and it is not a separate appointment. Every exam here includes an oral cancer screening, because the whole point of a routine visit is catching what you cannot see or feel yet.

Comfort is built into the room

X-rays are taken in your own treatment room, so you are not walked down a hallway and parked somewhere else. The chairs have heat and massage. If that sounds like a small thing, it is not: for a nervous patient, being warm and comfortable changes the entire appointment.

Care for every age

This is a true family practice. We see small children through to our most elderly patients, often from the same family, and our chairs can be adapted for patients arriving in a wheelchair. Nobody gets sent somewhere else because their needs are a little different.

Cleanings and exams in Plymouth

If it has been six months, or six years, the appointment is the same and so is the reception. No lecture, no judgment. We see families from Plymouth, Canton, Northville, and a fair way past all three, and a lot of them arrived after a bad experience somewhere else. Call us and we will find you a time.

Good questions

Questions patients often ask.

How often do I really need a dental cleaning?

For a lot of people every six months is right, but it is not a universal answer. Some patients do noticeably better at four months or three, particularly where gum health needs closer watching, and others stay healthy on a longer rhythm. Dr. deFuentes Cutter will recommend a schedule based on what she actually sees in your mouth and explain why.

Does a cleaning hurt?

It should not. Hand scaling is gentler than most people expect, and sensitivity usually comes from inflamed gums rather than from the cleaning itself, which means it improves as your gum health improves. If any part of it is uncomfortable, say so and we will adjust. Nobody here is going to push on through.

What if it has been years since my last visit?

Then you are in good company and there will be no lecture about it. A lot of our patients arrive after a long gap, often because of a bad experience somewhere else. We will take a full set of records, tell you plainly what we find, and work out a plan together. Where you start from is not a problem.

Do you take x-rays at every visit?

No. X-rays are taken when there is a clinical reason for them, not on a fixed schedule, and we will tell you what we are looking for. They are taken in your own treatment room rather than sending you off down a hallway, which keeps the appointment calmer and quicker.

Is a cleaning covered by insurance?

Routine cleanings and exams are among the most commonly covered treatments, though the details vary by plan. We accept most dental insurance and welcome both in-network and out-of-network patients. Before treatment begins, we will review your benefits with you so there are no surprises.
