Periodontal Treatment

Deep cleaning done gently, with numbing options that do not have to involve a needle.

Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth, and in its early stages it is both painless and reversible. Treatment at Soothing Dental in Plymouth means a deep cleaning with expert hand scaling, several ways to keep you numb and comfortable, and gum measurements tracked year over year so we can prove it is working.

How to tell whether you have it

Gums that bleed when you brush are not normal, however common it is. Neither is persistent bad breath, gums that have pulled back from the teeth, or a tooth that has started to feel slightly loose. Early gum disease often has no symptoms at all, which is exactly why it is checked at every routine visit rather than only when something hurts.

What a deep cleaning actually involves

A deep cleaning, sometimes called scaling and root planing, goes below the gum line to remove the hardened bacteria that a regular cleaning cannot reach, then smooths the root surface so the gum can reattach. It is usually done across more than one visit so that no single appointment is long or uncomfortable. Expert hand scaling does the precise work, supported by top-of-the-line cavitrons where the buildup calls for it.

Numbing without a needle

This is the part that stops people from booking, so it is worth saying clearly: there are several ways to keep you comfortable during a deep cleaning, and some of them do not involve an injection at all. If needles are the thing you dread, say so at the start of the appointment. We will find an approach that works for you rather than talking you into one that does not.

Laser bacterial removal

Alongside the cleaning itself, laser bacterial removal targets the bacteria living in the gum pocket. It is quick, it is comfortable, and it gives the tissue a cleaner environment to heal into.

We measure, and we keep the numbers

Gum health is measured in millimeters, and a number on its own tells you very little. We record your gum measurements and track them year over year, so instead of a vague reassurance you get an actual comparison: this pocket was four millimeters last year and it is three now. It is the difference between being told things are better and being shown it.

Good questions

Questions patients often ask.

Is gum disease reversible?

The earliest stage, gingivitis, is genuinely reversible with a thorough cleaning and better daily habits. Once it has progressed to periodontitis and bone has been lost, that bone does not grow back, but the disease can be stopped and the gums can become healthy and stable again. The sooner it is treated, the more there is to save.

Does a deep cleaning hurt?

It should not, because you will be properly numb. What surprises most patients is how much calmer the appointment is than they expected, and how much better their gums feel within a week or two. If you have had a rough experience with a deep cleaning before, tell us, because it usually means the numbing was not handled well.

Can I be numbed without an injection?

Often, yes. There are several ways to keep you comfortable during a deep cleaning and not all of them involve a needle. If injections are the specific thing you dread, say so at the start of the appointment rather than gritting your teeth through it. We would much rather adjust than have you avoid the treatment.

How many visits will it take?

Usually more than one. Splitting the mouth across two or more appointments keeps each one short and comfortable rather than turning it into an ordeal. After treatment we will want to see you more frequently for a while to make sure it is holding, then ease back as your gums stabilize.

What happens if I just leave it?

Gum disease does not resolve on its own. Left alone it continues quietly, and the usual end point is loose teeth and eventual tooth loss, which is a far bigger and more expensive problem than treating the gums. There is no judgment here about how long it has been. There is just a much better outcome the sooner you start.
